This volcano is already popular with many social media users. Visitors often flock here to witness one of the most impressive natural phenomena in the world. Some people even bring musical instruments to perform or try to bake marshmallows here.

Spectacular Landscape

Fagradalsfjall’s last eruption in 2021 took place continuously for more than 10 months afterward.

“The entire Reykjanes peninsula entered a new volcanic tectonic period that began in late 2019. It is expected that activity on the peninsula will continue over the coming decades with more eruptions likely. The more the eruption, the higher the seismicity,” Dr Sara Barsotti, the Icelandic Meteorological Office’s volcano hazard coordinator, told The Post.

Toxic Gases

Sightseeing is allowed, but visitors must always keep in mind that “playing with fire is dangerous”.

Cooling lava sometimes releases toxic gases, but the most common hazards involve hiking through mountainous areas with erratic weather conditions. Many visitors have broken their ankle when hiking.

Safety Comes First

“Search and rescue teams in Iceland are volunteers who take their time to keep you safe. So please respect and follow their request. You need careful preparation to have a trip to visit the volcanic eruption. It is absolutely not advisable to wander in the new lava fields,” said Ingibjörg Friðriksdóttir of Hótel Rangá.

Travellers are advised to have good hiking boots, water bottles and snacks. It is advisable hire local tour guides to get you there without incident.

“The two most recent volcanic eruptions occurred in uninhabited areas and far from critical infrastructure,” Barsotti said. It is difficult to predict where and when this activity will take place. Although many people have acknowledged its danger, this is one of the reasons that attracts visitors for a long time!”
